Tai Chi Chuan is a martial art form practiced by the martial artists predominantly in China. Tai Chi Chuan takes its base from the Chinese form of medical practice, Tai Chi. Both forms of art date back to the early ages. Since the two terms, Tai Chi Chuan and Tai Chi, are very similar let’s quickly have a glimpse at the difference between them.
Tai Chi Chuan vs. Tai Chi:
Most of the people who aren’t into such art forms comfortably use the terms interchangeably. Though that’s not an offense and there is not much of a difference as well, still you can use the terms to refer to two different things. While Tai Chi Chuan refers to the taiji form of martial art, Tai Chi is simply the same art form that is done for health reasons and medicinal benefits. So the next time you use the word, make it appropriate. Here we are going to have a look at the history of Tai Chi Chuan and the different forms and techniques of Tai Chi Chuan.
History of Tai Chi Chuan:
Tai Chi Chuan is a martial art form that originated in China. The founder of the art and the exact period in which it was put into practice still remain unknown. Different accounts date the art form to different periods and credits different people as founders of the art form. But most people believe that this art form originated at least 1500 years ago a time during which China faced a lot of invasion troubles.
If the accounts that state 1500 years were to be believed then, the period matches exactly the period during which Bodhidharma visited China. Bodhidharma developed the art of Yijin Jing in China. Yijin Jing is believed to be a part of exercise forms called Qigong, and Tai Chi Chuan also belongs to Qigong. So there are chances of these forms being similar and influencing each other. Still, we cannot drop down to a conclusion here. This is just one among the other possible theories that support the origin of Tai Chi Chuan.
Theories of Tai Chi Chuan:
The martial art form of Tai Chi Chuan is strictly based on the principles of Yin and Yang. Tai Chi Chuan has different forms, and different artists incorporate different styles. However, it is said that you can follow any style as long as the principles of Tai Chi Chuan are withheld. Tai Chi Chuan is built on the following theory:
The theory of Yin and Yang: Tai Chi Chuan focuses on the concepts of Yin and Yang. Yin and Yang represent equal halves of everything that helps the universe work properly. Like the sky and earth, male and female and so on. While Yang represents White, Exhale, Release, Expand and Give, Yin represents Black, Inhale, Store, Contract, and Receive.
Legend of Tai Chi Chuan:
Tai Chi Chuan is also known as Taijiquan. Like we said earlier, no one knows who the real founder of the art form is, so most people love to go by the legend that was formed about 700 to 800 years back. The credit of defining the art of Tai Chi Chuan is credited to Zhang San Feng who lived during the 13th century. As the legend goes, he is believed to have developed this art form after he witnessed a dual between a snake and the crane. That’s where he drew his inspiration from.
