The choice of a teacher for T’ai Chi Ch’uan can greatly impact a student’s motivation to continue the practice. Teachers’ behavior should reflect the T’ai Chi principles of relaxation, balance, and sensing when to intervene and when to retreat. The student’s right is to be comfortable in class and to learn in a way that implements his or her learning style. Since T’ai Chi is not about using brute strength, a good T’ai Chi teacher gently leads the student into deeper and deeper skill levels. Since T’ai Chi is non-competitive, the teacher promotes cooperative study between students.
